Overview

The Phantom of the Opera follows a disfigured composer haunting the Paris Opera House who becomes obsessed with a young soprano, told through one of the best-known scores in musical theatre. The chandelier drop and the boat sequence through the Phantom's underground lair remain two of the most famous pieces of stagecraft in the West End.

It's been running at His Majesty's Theatre since 1986, making it one of the longest continuously running musicals anywhere in the world — the production has had refreshes over the decades but keeps its core staging intact.
